Trump ends DACA, here's one West Michigan immigrant in limbo

Kevin Vazquez is an undocumented immigrant who lives in Grand Rapids. At 8 years old, Vazquez's family brought him to the United States from Guadalajara, Mexico. Under President Obama's administration, Vazquez was able to achieve Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status. The program temporarily shielded some young undocumented immigrants from deportation, allowing them to work legally, obtain a driver’s license and study. President Trump ordered an end to DACA, calling on Congress to replace the policy by March 5, 2018. Vazquez, who recently graduated from Grand Rapids Community College, will be working on a bachelor’s degree in organizational communications at Western Michigan University this fall. He dreams of working in higher education and one day becoming a college president. (Cory Morse |
